Sino Queer Short Film Festival

Lethe Flow and Nowhere Netherlands will co-host the "Sino Queer Short Film Festival", marking a fresh start for 2025. The festival will feature three short film collections under the following themes: "Rainbow Bridge" "Beyond Borders" "Queer Diaspora"

All the selected films are created by Sino-Queer filmmakers.

Jenny Man Wu, committee member of the Beijing Queer Film Festival (@beijingqueer ), will bring recent years' featured films from BQFF to Europe. Additionally, director Kit Hung (@kithunghk ) will showcase several exceptional works produced through the Queers Across The Waves - Queer Filmmaking Talent Development Programme. Kit will also attend in person to introduce and share insights about these films. Some of the participating directors will join us online for interactive discussions with the audience! Introduction of Third Session Queer Diaspora

How do diasporic experiences of Chinese individuals influence their queer identity and expression? What latent connections exist between cultural memory and queer representation? This program showcases six short films that enrich the singular narrative of queer identity, reimagining queer subjectivity through the interplay of culture, field, and personal identity. These multidimensional expressions turn diasporic experiences into significant opportunities for redefining Chinese queer identity, while resonating with broader intersections of queer culture and globalization. From inner loneliness to cultural displacement, from philosophical reflection to intimate relationships, these films capture the intricate emotions of queer individuals seeking belonging and self-redefinition.

At the same time, these films reveal how queerness functions as a force to counter the silencing of subjects within the diasporic condition. This silencing is not merely a linguistic struggle but reflects the marginalization and erasure of identities within dominant narratives. Here, Hopefully and Frozen Out both draw on themes of migration and dislocation, exploring how queer identity is reconsidered or redefined in foreign lands. In the fissures of cultural and social frameworks, the protagonists strive to find a sense of belonging. Their diasporic experiences deepen their understanding of their queer identity while challenging the boundaries of identity itself. Flying Fish blends reality and fiction, reevaluating the connections between drag performance and childhood memory, showing how cultural memory and queer self-discovery intertwine. Wegen Hegel uses philosophy and desire as its narrative thread, exploring the conflicts of loneliness, free will, and reality during the pandemic, with ‘Asian queer' identity becoming a lens through which self-reflection unfolds. The Parisian in Bali Village and Water Under the Bridge approach the themes of identity dislocation and cultural recognition from another angle. These films explore how queer individuals seek new modes of expression within the cultural framework of their homeland and how globalization shapes their queer identities.

Through visual expression, queer subjects reclaim their voices in diverse ways: they leverage personal narratives and artistic practices to transcend societal constraints and infuse new meaning into their diasporic experiences. In this struggle, queer identity emerges not only as a form of self-affirmation but also as a creative tool for rebuilding a sense of belonging. These short films aim to provide viewers, especially those navigating their own diasporic conditions, with a profound dialogue on singular identities, diaspora, and belonging.

An émigré retreats to frozen prairies and swamps, hoping to find a meaningful story and escape the anxieties of dislocation. Delivered as a film-letter to the protagonist’s sister in rural China.

I found many artistic photos from my childhood, which made me realize certain connections between photo studios and drag performances. 3-4 Wegen Hegel

“The real is rational, and the rational is real”, says German Philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. But when the pandemic hits Germany, everything changes. Chinese student PING just started his philosophy studies and faces many obstacles: hostility, loneliness, lockdown. On a dating app he receives spicy photos from MAX, who proposes a “social distance hook-up”. Ping is excited and embarks on his adventure. Offered a mysterious drug, he is about to have sex, when he suddenly notices a book by Hegel. It sucks him into a drug induced reflection about free will and reality, which kills the vibe of the moment. He flees after an argument and loses himself in the drug experience. The next morning, he makes another unexpected discovery – and all that because of Hegel (Wegen Hegel).

3-6 Water Under the Bridge

Two girls, returning to their hometown, Yibin, for different reasons, matched on Tinder. They were each contemplating their next steps: one had just lost her job in Beijing and moved back home, while the other was on vacation after returning from the United States. One of the girls’ question brought their thoughts together: would the world change us, or would we change ourselves? During their date, questions and discussions gradually revealed the issues between them. The river and the passing train illuminated their relationship.

Forgive Us Our Trespasses closing weekend

Forgive us our yearnings is a performative reading of passages on sexual desire and erotic experience drawn from both personal writings and published works. Responding to works in the exhibition Forgive us our Trespasses that depict corporal desire and pleasure that defy social conventions uphold taboos on the body, the reading serves as an audio and visual activation, echoing the practice of Myriam Omar Awadi, I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih, Dorothy Iannone, Felix de Rooy, and others. By exploring the expansive, self-expanding, and yet often spurned site of sexuality, Forgive us our yearnings pronounces the exhilaration, interconnection, transformation, vulnerability and, at times, pain that reside in sexual desire while denouncing sexual norms that tend towards indifference, individualism, and sensual deprivation.

Four cultural practitioners and activists from Berlin’s queer and/or literary communities are invited as the readers of this event:

Anne Aradi is a queer feminist, activist, and artist based in Berlin, deeply committed to social justice and amplifying marginalized voices. 

Popo Fan is a film-maker, writer, and artist from China who is at the moment exploring sex as a mythology of representation in both his life and artworks.

Mary Lee is a writer, translator, editor, and art practitioner currently based in Hong Kong and Berlin.

Matagumpay is a visual artist, writer, and performer making work about devotion and transition. He is trans/gender fluid and Filipino raised in the US.

Casa Asia and CIFRA organize an Asian video art program for Loop

Olga Shishko, visiting professor at the University of Venice, Ca’ Foscari, and Head of the Art Department at CIFRA; Anastasia Stravinsky, art director of CIFRA; and Menene Gras Balaguer, Director of the Department of Culture and Exhibitions at Casa Asia.

The program Gentle Tremor: New Horizons in Asian Video Art brings together recent works by eight Asian artists from Hong Kong, Japan, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan, focused on discovering new horizons for moving images. In pursuit of this goal, they explore the limits of video art and its potential for the future development of moving images, as well as the creation of new narratives and storytelling forms. While each piece maintains its individuality and unique production, it’s essential not to overlook the cultural differences that characterize them, nor the connections that can be made among the various symbolic landscapes they encompass. In a divided and increasingly polarized world, the Director of CIFRA believes that art can play a crucial role in both similar and opposing cultures, effecting changes in power dynamics that enhance audience awareness. The planet we know today is one in crisis, which can only change through technological and scientific invention and continual innovation in the visual arts.

The first work to be screened is A Palm, a Fountain, an Umbrella (2024), by Sharon Cheuk Wun Lee, a video poem that explores the changes in her city brought about by sociopolitical shifts, bilingualism, and their impact on the cultural identity of affected citizens. Ebony Dreams (2019), by Eri Saito, is an experimental exploration of how our bodies move unconsciously, such as in cases of sleepwalking, perceived by others as inexplicable movements. The intriguing, surreal video Ringo (2020) by Amie Barouh evokes childhood memories and our inner child in today’s context. The sarcastic video Lerne Deutsch in Meiner Küche (2020), by Popo Fan, immerses viewers in a cooking class with an absurd twist on the German language. Axl presents his latest work Joseph’s Midnight Party (2024) for the first time. In The Story of Nanka Gulu and Iron Hawk (2021), by Chen Zhou, the audience encounters the ancestral wisdom of an escaped intelligent drone. Mother Water Gulbib Balkhash (2024), by Almagul Menlibayeva, distorts our understanding of geography to reveal new worlds. The program concludes with Curse of Staged Atavism (2024) by Shuree Sarantuya, a piece that won the CIFRA Award at Art Night Venezia this summer.

Featuring documentaries and independent films created by Chinese queer feminists, this screening+dialogue series speaks about marginalized individuals' journeys of resistance and empowerment in the past decades where we witnessed increasing crackdowns on China’s queers and feminists communities. We invite you to join as we hope this series can gather Chinese diasporas and queer allies as a community in solidarity despite state surveillance wanting to break us into isolated fragments.

Our third movie focuses on fathers of LGBTQ+ individuals in China and challenge our stereotypes about fathers! The screening will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A from the director Fan Popo, and we strongly encourage you to stay for a facilitated discussion among participants.

In China, most families have difficulties facing their lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender (LGBT) children. They have to contend with common social beliefs that homosexuality is shameful, abnormal, a perverted condition caused by deviant family relationships. Many parents see their kids as their property, and fathers often assert their authority to ensure that no harm comes to the family reputation.

The documentary features six Chinese fathers who talk openly and freely about their experiences with their LGBT children. Speaking out against discrimination and stigma, they redefine what it means to protect a household. They fully embrace their kids for who they are, and become pioneer activists fighting for an equal and diverse society.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER:

Popo Fan is a queer filmmaker, writer, and activist from China, where his queer documentary films have made a notable impact. Since 2016, he has concentrated on writing and directing scripted, sex-positive shorts. He is the co-founder of the Queer University Video Training Camp and has been an organizer of the Beijing Queer Film Festival for more than a decade. Popo was invited to sit on the jury of the Teddy Award of the Berlinale in 2019. He is currently based in Berlin developing his fictional feature debut.

Zweiteiliger Paneltalk - „Rassistische Realitäten“ und „Rassismuskritik in der Kunst“

Im Rahmen des Begleitprogramms zur Ausstellung „Jørgen Buch – Black & White“ findet am 19.10.2024 von 9.30 bis 13.30 Uhr in der Kunsthalle Rostock der zweiteilige Paneltalk „Rassistische Realitäten“ und „Rassismuskritik in der Kunst“ statt.

Unter dem Titel „Rassistische Realitäten“² werden im ersten Panel die Geschichte des Rassismus, seine Entwicklung und Formen in Deutschland beleuchtet sowie die aktuelle Lage diskutiert. Dabei soll insbesondere die Lage in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern thematisiert und Mittel und Wege gegen gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit und Rassismus sowie Möglichkeiten der Stärkung von zivilgesellschaftlichem Engagement und einer demokratischen Kultur aufgezeigt werden.

Ausgehend u.a. von Jørgen Buchs Gemälde „Black and White“ (1977), in dem er den amerikanischen Rassismus anprangert, sind Betroffene und auf das Thema spezialisierte Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Bereiche Bildende Kunst und Film sowie Bildung und Vermittlung eingeladen worden, ins Gespräch zu kommen. Dabei geht es darum, Kunstwerke rassismuskritisch zu lesen, aber auch verschiedene Perspektiven zu diskutieren, wie Kunst gegen Rassismus wirken kann.

“What is reasonable is real; and what is real is reasonable,” says the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. But when the pandemic hits Germany, everything changes. Chinese student PING has just started his philosophy degree and faces many obstacles: Hostility, loneliness, lockdown. Via a dating app, he receives hot photos from MAX, who suggests a “social distance hook-up”. Ping is thrilled and throws himself into the adventure. He is offered a mysterious drug and is about to have sex when a book suddenly catches his eye, a book by Hegel. It draws him into a drug-induced reflection on free will and reality, which destroys the mood of the moment. After an argument, he flees and loses himself in the drug trip. The next morning he makes another unexpected discovery – and it’s all because of Hegel.

Description

For Chinese parents, finding out that their kid is gay usually presents a major tragedy, with the big majority utterly unable to accept the homosexuality of their son or daughter. However, during recent years a fresh rainbow wind has been blowing over the Chinese mainland: a pioneer generation of Chinese parents has been stepping up and speaking out on their love for their gay kids. This documentary features 6 mothers from all over China, who talk openly and freely about their experiences with their homosexual children. With their love, they are giving a whole new definition to Chinese-style family bonds.

About this event

Featuring documentaries and independent films created by Chinese queer feminists, this screening+dialogue series speaks about marginalized individuals' journeys of resistance and empowerment in the past decades where we witnessed increasing crackdowns on China’s queers and feminists communities. We invite you to join as we hope this series can gather Chinese diasporas and queer allies as a community in solidarity despite state surveillance wanting to break us into isolated fragments.

Our second movie focuses on mothers of LGBTQ+ individuals in China and how love connects us all. The screening will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A from the director Fan Popo (who's currently residing in Berlin), and a facilitated discussion among participants.

Synopsis: “What if your son or daughter told you they were gay?” Six Chinese mothers share openly and freely about their experiences as parents of gay and lesbian children with the camera, in a culture where queer identity and sexual outness is strictly unaccepted. Though the specifics of their stories are all different, each mother shares their own version of a “coming out” tale — recognizing, acknowledging, and accepting their children’s sexualities. Mama Rainbow paints a hopeful portrait of the slowly changing mindset of a culture where the fear of persecution and rejection still makes coming out and living openly a great challenge. With their love, they are giving a whole new definition to Chinese-style family bonds.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER:

Popo Fan is a queer filmmaker, writer, and activist from China, where his queer documentary films have made a notable impact. Since 2016, he has concentrated on writing and directing scripted, sex-positive shorts. He is the co-founder of the Queer University Video Training Camp and has been an organizer of the Beijing Queer Film Festival for more than a decade. Popo was invited to sit on the jury of the Teddy Award of the Berlinale in 2019. He is currently based in Berlin developing his fictional feature debut.

habakari-cinema+records was founded in 1999 by two gay filmmaker-artists in Japan. Their works often tell explicit stories of gay love and sex. The Secret to My Silky Skin, an adaption of manga, features Ryota, a boy who lives with his parents in Kyoto and when visiting Tokyo for a business trip stays with his fuck buddy, Issei. The film traces the “extremely mundane” daily life of gay men in Japan including sex which unfolds on screen. Solid tells the story of two men; during their first meeting, their sex is constantly interrupted by an earthquake. Romance fills the air in both films as does an electric sexual tension. (PF)

Imaizumi Koichi has acted in over 100 films since 1990, primarily "pink" (Japanese romantic porn) films. In 1999, he co-founded 'habakari-cinema+records' with Iwasa Hiroki and started independent filmmaking. 

Iwasa Hiroki has been making music since 1995. He also directs films and writes reviews on music and film.

In this sumptuous musical adaptation of one of China’s most famous folk tales, Betty Loh Ti plays a fourth–century maiden (Chu Ying-Tai) who yearns for an education. Disguised as a boy in order to attend school, she meets the dashing Liang Shan-Po, with whom she falls passionately in love. Six decades after its release, this retrospective screening offers audiences the chance to reconsider how the gender-bending role-play traditional in Huangmei opera also features in this classic film. The decision to cast a female actress (Ivy Ling Po) in the male role further complicates the onscreen sexual dynamics. Desire is presented as both fluid and uninhibited by gender in this playful, hugely popular and award-winning musical that made Ling Po an icon. (QE)

Xinghan Ren, born and raised in Xi'an, China, is a percussionist. He moved to Hamburg in 2017 and studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Now he is a percussion teacher at this school.

Directed by Cui Zi’en, China's pioneering queer filmmaker, this documentary features interviews with over 30 people including activists, scholars, artists, and filmmakers who have contributed to and experienced changes related to Tongzhi / 同志 (homosexuality/LGBT) over the past 30 years, up until 2008. Archival footage, including the first-ever appearance of gays and lesbians on state television and documention of challenging moments, such as the shutdown of the second edition of the Beijing Queer Film Festival, result in a film that preserves a significant part of queer history; by investigating the present and exploring the future, Cui Zi'en created a historical milestone that is still relevant today. Hello Tongzhi! Queer Dongxi: Panel discussion about queer diaspora comrades

The screening is followed by a talk with Hongwei Bao (online) and Yi Wang

Tongzhi (同志), which originally means “comrades", is now used in Chinese speaking communities worldwide for homosexuality, gayness, queerness. Dongxi (东西) is a double entendre that can mean both “East and West” and “something”. In this panel, Tongzhi and Dongxi becomes points of departure for scholar Hongwei Bao and curator Yi Wang to talk about their experiences involving/observing LGBTQ+ rights and art in China and Taiwan. During this session, we will also discuss how to build and maintain modes of solidarity that aim to promote queer East Asian film, counter colonialism and Western-centric narratives. (PF)

Hongwei Bao (he/him) is an Associate Professor in Media Studies at the University of Nottingham. 

Yi Wang is the founder, director and programmer of Queer East, a London-based festival that showcases LGBTQ+ cinema, live arts, and moving image work from East and Southeast Asia and diasporas.

THIS IS LOVE: Shu Lea Cheang earned a reputation as being a badass cyberpunk filmmaker with her 2000 cult smash I.K.U. in which sensual cyborgs fuck for information and pleasure. 23 years later, UKI takes us on a journey with replicant REIKO, defunct and dumped on vast tech dump Etrashville, as they try to pull themselves back together with the help of Etrashville's transgenic inhabitants. Parallel to REIKO’s trajectory is that of an infected city where we are made aware of reckless scheming as part of a biotech enterprise known as GENOM Co. Through her own brand of alt-reality cinema, Cheang has created a genre of her own: Scifi New Queer Cinema. (SLC/JB)

This is karaoke, this is love! In this Karaoke session, everybody will become the host. Via a group chat that anyone can join by scanning a QR code, you will be able to share the link to the song you want to sing. The person who sings first will call out the name for the next song. With this method, we will create a Karaoke relay, passing the microphone like handing off a baton. The primary language will be English, everyone is welcome. A community-based, unnamed Chinese Karaoke group will emerge. Attention: there might be multiple melancholic Chinese pop songs! Let's sing to turn the cinema into a field of joy (and perhaps some sadness), to the gray December sky of Berlin, for the upcoming Christmas, Silvester, and Lunar New Year. COMRADES I LOVE YOU

Curated by Popo Fan and Sarnt Utamachote in collaboration with Yi Wang and Queer East Film Festival UK

Focusing on the aspects of sound, embodiment and musicality in queer Asian cinema, this series showcases historical and contemporary films in transnational dialogue with each other. The program borrows its title from “Comrades: Almost A Love Story” (1998, Peter Chan), a classic Chinese film which became extremely popular in Asia and especially in countries with large Chinese diasporic communities. Its soundtrack (Teresa Teng) and the intertwined motifs of labor migration, destiny, and desire was a format that influenced many filmmakers that followed. “Comrades I Love You” thematizes how the practices of voicing/singing or embodying certain roles (“drag”) has the power to create a form of cinematic comradeship and to subvert conventional family structures and desires. Each of the films in this series have been part of screenings hosted by Queer East, a cross-disciplinary festival based in London that showcases boundary-pushing LGBTQ+ cinema, live arts, and moving image work from East and Southeast Asia and its diasporic communities, exploring notions of what it means to be queer and Asian today. 

Yi Wang is the director and programmer of Queer East. Outside this role, Yi works as a creative producer for performing arts and cross-cultural events. 

Sarnt Utamachote is a nonbinary filmmaker and curator based in Berlin. They are a co-founder of un.thai.tled, an artist collective from the German-Thai diaspora, through which they have organized un.thai.tled Film Festival at Sinema Transtopia since 2020. 

Popo Fan is a Berlin-based Chinese diaspora filmmaker, curator and writer. His films include queer activism documentaries and scripted, sex-positive shorts. For more than a decade, he has been an organizer of Beijing Queer Film Festival.
