“The real is rational, and the rational is real,” says Hegel. Inspired by this sentence, Chinese queer filmmaker Popo Fan writes and directs the short film “Wegen Hegel.” But what are we talking about when we talk about philosophy? Is it possible to queer the “classics,” color the philosophers, or even create our own philosophy? With some thoughts from his filmmaking experiences and your creativities, we are going to hold an empowering workshop that includes an exploration of the history of emoji and the making of memes.
Popo FAN 范坡坡 (b. 1985, he/him) is a queer filmmaker, writer, and activist from China. Under the precarious conditions of cultural production in the People’s Republic due to state censorship, he has already produced several independent short films and documentaries that have been screened at national film festivals such as the Beijing Queer Film Festival and the Beijing Independent Film Festival, as well as at international film festivals. His films cover topics such as same-sex marriage (New Beijing, New Marriage), transgender (Be A Woman), and feminism (The VaChina Monologues). Fan’s trilogy Chinese Closet, Mama Rainbow, Papa Rainbow focus on Chinese LGBTIQ+ families. In 2011, Fan received the Prism Award from the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Fan has been living in Berlin since 2017. His work has been funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung’s Grenzgänger program, among others. In 2017, he participated in the young talent program Berlinale Talents and was a jury member for the queer film award Teddy Award at the Berlinale 2019.
